MANCHESTER BONFIRES & FIREWORK DISPLAYS THIS WEEK!

Has it really been a year already? Halloween is done and out of the way for 2019, so we just have Bonfire Night left before the inexorable trudge towards Christmas. Do we sound grumpy? Nah – it’s just that time flies when you’re having fun, which we have a lot of at Secrets!

For those who didn’t pay attention in their history lessons, Bonfire Night commemorate the events of 5 November 1605, when that cheeky arsonist Guy Fawkes and his mates including Robert Catesby, masterminded the Gunpowder Plot with the novel aim of blowing up the Houses of Parliament (as you do). It didn’t work and this motley crew of renegades were arrested when they were discovered guarding a pile of explosives under the House of Lords. So chuffed were the people that their ruler King James I survived this attempted assassination that they lit bonfires around the city – because apparently fighting fire with more fire is a really good idea. Subsequently the Observance of 5th November Act was introduced in recognition of the plot's failure and the annual celebration of Bonfire Night spread like wildfire (pardon the pun). 400+ years later, we still get our big coats and woolly hats on to mark the failed arson attempt with – you guessed it – fires and explosives. And there’s no irony in this whatsoever.

Anyhoo – who cares about irony and nonsensical behaviour when there are some cracking bonfire and fireworks displays in Manchester and the North West?
