12th May – 30th June 2019 is the time when LGBTQ+ people (and straight people!) from around the world remember and commemorate the Stonewall riots which took place at the end of June 1969. This year, June 2019 represents 50 years of Pride celebrations, and WorldPride, which began in Rome in 2000 provides an international focus for issues affecting LGBTQ+ communities around the globe. This year World Pride is bigger than ever.
2019 sees the LGBTQ+ community become more accepted and integrated into society, demonstrating equality and becoming ever more visible. Never before has the LGBTQ+ community been championed by so many influential people from world leaders to pop stars. More countries than ever are taking steps to recognise LGBTQ+ rights and champion equality and visibility. In Britain we now see children of school age simply accept their gay and trans friends without question – but there is still a long way to go both around the world where persecution of LGBTQ+ communities persists, and right here at home.
Although World Pride month is celebrated globally in June, Pride celebrations take place in cities all around the world throughout the year. In Australia where their summer falls over our British winter, Pride celebrations take place from October to March to coincide with the sunshine, whereas here on the other side of the hemisphere, May and June see the start of most British Pride celebrations, with Manchester Pride falling over the August bank holiday weekend.
This year, Manchester Pride moves away from Manchester city centre’s Gay Village home on Canal Street to a new location at the Mayfield Depot. This former railway station located minutes away from Manchester Piccadilly Train Station is set to be one of Manchester’s hottest new venues, with The Warehouse Project also announcing its move here this year. And Manchester Pride is set to be bigger than ever with Ariana Grande making a return to Manchester to headline the Mayfield stage.
